It is as a sign of respect and gratitude for the person you used to them. I do not think this should be taken as gay, as many people believed it was. Even if you are a kind of sandals / flip-flops use visible ankle / toe ring.

Please use it, should not feel insulted. It is to his liking and he would need to examine what you want when you want to wear.
it would be nice .... gayish but at the same time ... if the guy wears it for the love of your partner ... to eat more and they should not think twice.
